Problem in iPod - “Do Not Disconnect” message is not going away

Introduction:This article gives a solution for the question, “How to fix the iPod problem ‘Do Not Disconnect’ message is not going away and Apple iPod is not responding / hanged / frozen?”
Problem description: Whenever the Apple iPod displays “Do Not Disconnect” message, the disconnect should be done only after proper ‘Eject’. Sometimes even after doing proper ‘Eject’, the message may not go away and the Apple iPod may have frozen / hanged too, that is not responding to user inputs.

Solution:
This is applicable for all 1G to 4G+ iPods.
Eject the Apple iPod (Incorrect eject may be a cause of this problem and so do the following steps)

  1. In the Apple iTunes software ‘Source’ panel, it should show the Apple iPod along with a small grey uparrow image to the right of the Apple iPod image.
  2. You may also see an image (Apple iPod with uparrow) in the lower right corner of the Apple iTunes software.
  3. Now, either stop all the activities that involves read / write (copy / update / delete) operation or wait until it completes. There should not be any activity in the Apple iTunes software.
  4. Click the grey uparrow from the source panel OR the image from the lower right corner to ‘Eject’ the Apple iPod.

If the “Do Not Disconnect” message is gone and it works, celebrate it with your favourite tunes, else relax we have got one more step to go.

Restart the Apple iPod (This will not erase the music, this is like a restart to a PC when it hangs)

  1. Turn off the ‘hold switch’ by sliding it away from the head phone jack and the orange patch should NOT be visible.
  2. Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneouly for 4 to 10 seconds
For 1G to 3G Apple iPod: ‘Menu’ and ‘Play/Pause’
For 4G+ Apple iPods (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): ‘Menu’ and ‘Select’
For shuffle iPod: turn it off and then turn it on.

Now the restart is done, the message “Do Not Disconnect” should disappear and the ‘Apple’ logo should briefly appear in the screen. Then the regular menu should appear.

    I recently bought a 5G video iPod.
When I first connected it to my Mac, it immediately displayed the flashing “Do not disconnect screen.”

I waited until it became clear there was a problem and began searching on the Net.

Most sites suggested ejecting the iPod and resetting it. I did this, then reconnected to my Mac.

The flashing “Do not disconnct” sign reappeared and remains as long as the iPod is connected to the computer.

ITunes says the software is up to date.

The iPod functions fine when unplugged from the Mac, but as soon as it’s connected I can’t do anything with it.

    Any suggestions?

Thanks for the information on resetting my ipod! I had the problem of my ipod nano´s screen freezing, but it wasn´t frozen on the do not disconnect screen but rather on a song selection screen. However this did happen shortly after disconnecting my ipod from the PC.

As you mentioned, I turned off the hold switch and then held simultaneously the menu and select buttons for about 10 seconds, and like you said I saw the apply logo screen briefly, and then I was able to work my ipod as normal.

Thanks again, your advice saved me from a lot of frustration!

Thanks for your advise. I had bought ipod just 15 days back and today it hanged while I was copyiing songs on it from my laptop. I was worried that I had lost the ipod but thanks for your advise I have been able to recover my ipod. I pressed Menu and select button simultaneously and it restarted. However I would like to share one more thing with readers that earlier I had all of my songs erased while syncing the ipod from Itunes v 7.1 to v 7.2. I did not find any utility which would allow me to save my songs at my laptop/pc .

My 30g video suddenly froze on Do Not Disconnect. The time it froze is at the top and at that time I had the hold button on. Now, it will not turn off, even when I try to reset it. I have disconnected it from the computer and restarted my computer. I have plugged it into the wall. I have downloaded the latest version of itunes…all with no luck. It has been on, with the screen lit for 6 hours and the battery is still full. What do I do? Please help me
